These guys are the Sidemen, an ensemble of friends from England who run a shared YouTube channel called The Sidemen and have personal channels too. Started as individuals on YouTube but through some already acquainted at school while others met via the internet, they formed a collective. The crew is just like any other group on YouTube; they do crazy challenges and stunts when not making fun videos or simply having chats. YouTube members Harry, Ethan, JJ, Tobi, Simon, Vik and Josh make up the Sidemen who are all very successful on YouTube’s platform and also extremely rich.
The biggest mainstream member is none other than KSI, also known as JJ. But beyond being a larger-than-life figure within the group, JJ boasts of musical and boxing talents as well. I think that all these men have huge work ethics and an insatiable thirst for more in their lives, but JJ shows his to everyone. Simon has his charity, Ethan has his fitness content, Vik has his DJing but it seems like JJ is the one that keeps an eye out for an opportunity and takes hold of it by force.
The documentary provides a glimpse into The Sidemen: who they really are and what they stand for. However, I felt that it did not bring in a lot of new stuff if one has already been watching Sidemen content and following their own channels. Nevertheless, there were some things depicted in the film that I found interesting about them off YouTube though. On the other hand, while I was aware of some aspects of their lives on YouTube as well as little about their backstories, I had no idea about the Sides brand or that they even had a Christmas number one hit in 2022! They can do such great things now and go unnoticed by me; this is weird because once upon a time, my screen used to be dominated by these people.
The Sidemen are a group worth admiring for anyone, YouTubers in particular. The most interesting thing about it is that these acts (label) are not just about the internet but may also include boxing and music among other things. What amazes me is how they continue to increase their numerical values with each action they take since all previous attempts have been successful
This documentary teaches us an extra lesson on the other side of the coin as well. They came to YouTube at the right moment when it was still developing and yet far from reaching full capacity, however they named their first collective home “the factory” because they couldn’t get enough of working, eating or sleeping. Josh explained this in his own words “work while others sleep so that you can live like others cannot.” It is wrong to say that they got lucky or stumbled upon success; rather, grit and determination led them through trials as though every new venture would be bigger than the last one. Most people with their circumstances would be wealthy, young millionaires and retire early in order to live comfortable lives full of luxury. The boys on the other hand are always moving forward and I believe that’s what makes them deserving of being among the top 1% although this documentary also reveals many disadvantages that come with being at the top.
If you already like The Sidemen, there may not be much new here for you. However, if you are seeking some encouragement to pursue goals and dreams, then this is a film that might help especially if your own aspirations resemble those achieved by these men. If you need an extra push to get you working then this could be a good place to begin.
