This production has a comedy and emotional aspects with Song Kang-ho getting his first leading role. Im Dae-ho is depicted as a dwarf, pushover, underperforming financial advisor who is always late to work. As a punishment for being late to work, a character who seems to be overweening and constantly preaches him out and idiotically holding him in a headlock every day. Somewhat, he is quite a loser, hopelessly lost in work and society and still chains up in a home with a father who never misses an opportunity to ridicule him. Nevertheless, he appears to rather sail through the day and even develops an infatuation for a lady clerk, which of course is utterly unpromising.
One day, he remembers coming across a shabby wrestling gym that he decided to train at with the hopes of getting more practice to break the headlocks of his frenzied manager. However, this time the owner was less impressed with the attempt of sweet talking him and awkwardness he was used to and decided to throw him out instead. Either way, after being contacted by a promoter for training to a villainous character, the owner accepted him back. In the process of the time, I’m catering to his wrestling activities during the night proved beneficial for him as he started being more assertive during work. Also, owing to his devoutness in wrestling, people respected him because of his determination to turn into a disreputable Foul King of wrestling as he trained himself to learn a variety of the moves and dirty tricks.
In comparison to ‘The Quiet Family’, ‘The Sports drama’ showed a subplot related to south Korea’s competitive working culture where co-workers strive to outdo each other. Kim has a never ending attraction for black comedy and violence. He has also shown a hint of corruption and pressure faced by employees while displaying remarkable character work. With the use of slow motion and creative adjusting amount of tension is built while including other comedy tactics. The wrestling blame can get a bit graphic especially during the extended ending fight sequence which was uniquely edited. But the feeling conveyed is still amusing regardless of the comical sequences.
According to international box office records, Kang-ho has acted in over 15 films, resonating his character to the audience, along with establishing a remarkable franchise which aids in his reputation. With enhancing connections, Kang-ho was formerly able to star in films such as “Paju” alongside actresses such as Lee Eun-joo, this aided in him securing the road on becoming a descriptive storyteller. In the context of other movies like “Shiri” and “The Foul King”, Kang-ho’s evolution through them is commendable as he featured as a manic casting actor. In contrast to other actors, Kang-ho’s presence on screen was alluring as he specialized in performing stunts involving hard hitting body slams, vertical drops along with mesmerizing backflips. In comparison to other movies, the most interesting scene was when song Wayne envisioned himself to be Elvis in the dramatic close-up segment. This sparked the beginning of Kang-ho’s career as starting was a full package too with a promising result.
The supporting cast is just as talented and unforgettable portraying a collection of charming and vibrant people. Jung Woong-in embodied the heart-wrenching Choi Du-sik, a self-supporting colleague of Im, as stern and frigid as their tyrant brunch manager, Song Young-chang, is quite the same. Those two are the resident wrestlers and provide most of the comedic clips and they are also funny and sweet characters. Jang Jin-young is also great as Min Young, the daughter of the gym owner that may consider dating Im in the future. However, the timing is not right for the romance.
Valuable compliments pop up after its release, “The Foul King” based on an individual searching for their identity has surely raised both Kim and Song’s market value in the film industry. With the exception of Song’s breathtaking physicality, this movie is definitely a good time and a good spirit film. Most importantly, credits go to the director for deciding not to be so loud about the wrestling aspect of the film or making Im Dae-ho the main character a corny character as he is a masked wrestler.
