Ten Tigers of Guangdong: Invincible Iron Fist (2022)

Essentially this online film focuses predominantly on one of the Ten Tigers, that is Liang Kun (Louis Fan Siu Wong), even though Su Can or Beggar Su has a minor role. But the other eight tigers never appear. Though both of these Tigers are Hung Gar Kuen practitioners, each of them have their particular distinct style that they practiced and perfected. In addition, Liang Kun is a member of the Iron Bridge Three, which is the name associated with him due to his great power and strong leg stance. He also created a fighting technique called Iron Wire Fist where he uses iron rings on his arms to add power to his fists during the fight.

Having been consistently bullied by Hu Da Hai, a rich kid in the area, along with his two friends, Liang had what can be described as a dark childhood. In order to escape from the horror, he decided to take refuge in Shaolin temple and learned kung fu in order to eventually fight back. After many many years, he had been successful in developing the Hung Kuen technique, However, he was too violent and reckless for any further training which led his Abbot to expel him. Fast forward to the present, he returned to his childhood village seeking out his friends only to learn that Hu was still bullying people except this time, Liang was able to carry on a fair fight. While he tried to lead a life in peace, he was soon caught up in a conspiracy with a wrong and vile cult, they would poison and manipulate martial artists from Jianghu recruiting them into evil. Alongside that, the untimely and tragic death of his friends managed to shatter his dream.

Turning to a fabled figure is always guaranteed to yield high-octane drama and excitement: Louis Fan Siu Wong takes the audience by storm. This time, however, he outperformed himself he was much more charismatic outside of the action scenes in which he was expected to shine. His compassionate close-up with Zai Mi Re however, revealed a side of him that did tend to compromise such skill. Zai Mi Re being Bai Siao his childhood love is quite the contrast. Unfortunate though, that the most-anticipated character of the movie, drunkard Su Can aka the Beggar, comes out to be quite fast-paced. Jia Ruo Jun is left interpreting an outstand film in which a lot was lacking.

Norman Chui has worked with Shaw Brothers for over two decades and in what seems to be an effort of self-fulfillment comes to be very optimistic in being Hu Ching Ying a paradox, he is a stonking liar searing to other characters of the movie. Choi prides his work even as a overstepping father punishing Hu Da Hai, the town bully. The awkward silence surrounding the town aside, the audience still manages to get the humor brought to the film by Jiang Xi Rao and Wu Guo Bao.

Given the film’s budget, I will say that it’s cinematography is pleasing, with the mountains, rivers and forests standing out as particularly stunning sights. Although Yan Guang Xing is credited as the film’s director, both Huang Guan Bao and Jin Zhe assisted him. I, however, get the impression that the latter are more closely associated with the martial arts choreography, which is, regrettably, another discouraging aspect of the project’s overall level. The film is essentially a kung fu flick so it’s shocking to see how bad the fight scenes actually were, uninspired and unimaginative.

Equally bad is the music score: full of clichés and very down to earth. Take Liang’s kung fu performance with the Shaolin monks and my bad, Kung Fu Monks for instance, and the setting is complemented by the unnecessary electric guitar a la black metal, it fit neither the place nor the performers. Then there is the overuse of the piano and violin that’s meant to create an aura of sadness in those sad scenes

In general, this latest take on how Liang Kun achieved his Iron Fist style of kung Fu is rather disappointing due to the cliched plot and a lack of solid action. The acting does not do justice, either, being greatly average and even flat at times, especially in the case of the supporting cast. In general, there is nothing here to surprise or entertain the viewers, and Fan certainly has more appropriate use of his skills. However, this is without a doubt the only advantage of the movie, running for less than eighty minutes is probably its only relief.
