Mancer figured out quickly back in his childhood that his father, Wah, isn’t like the other adults. He abused a lot, he had trouble understanding things and he was gullible as well. He found out that Wah was mentally handicapped as well, but in order to survive, managed to leave them both. It made Mancer have more responsibilities at an early age. The two become even more miserable, however, due to the onset of the pandemic. He is also off on a rough start as he and his father are taken advantage of from the elderly woman who france’s them. One of his female friends in class Mancer when she talks about stand-up comedy. He was initial reluctant but then embraced, and he is a lot less concerned about struggling through life. Instead of being sad, Mancer saw the comical side as life throws laughter and uses sadder moments as inspiration. Wah’s miserable life serves as the spine for comedy.
We are introduced to the bond between Wah and Mancer and how moving the journey was, Au Cheuk Man successfully manages to capture their story while ensuring accuracy and realism, but it always manages to transform it into a sober and mellowing coming of age story.
Last one was funny but more as a sarcastic stroke as Muya ends up with the most shocking realizations of his fathers decisions and actions. Funny enough, i expected to see him in a more serious tone, as he is a comedian and writers, and tends to poke fun on topics that most people wouldn’t. Moving comedy as Au Cheuk Man making a straightforward remark that even the most difficult things can somehow be dealt with using humor. The comment is a bit romantic, unrealistic yet effective, especially to prevent the film from being overly meager with emotion and blowing out the actuator.
Simultaneously, owing to the objective of the film we determine that elements of certainty do exist, though the harmonious central landmarks of the paternal tale gradually lead one through its climax. There are certain engaging traits in terms of how the film portrays the cross difficulties of two such distinct people, sauntering approximately from the life span of Mance up to the very latest time, therein refinement benevolence for film quality is contributed.
However, it would be more interesting to know what exactly Wah did so that she could get married and that could go down another route but I don’t mind. Though Mance’s developing romance with his classmate has a bit of a difficulty in delivering it to its audiences, it’s amusing.
What yields favorable conclusions is the cast of characters with Ben Yuen as Wah making each moment he appears in the film an indelible one using all his acting prowess by displaying his mental issues in the most deep yet rewarding manner by exhibiting his problems in a kind way. Mancer’s character is a good one filled with a young man who is undergoing a lot of emotional turmoil and also a stand up comedian, and M Wong does well in both Mancer’s protagonists given the atmosphere. Mance’s girlfriend Ng Wing-Sze adds a pleasing character in the with her strong willed and stubborn person who fights against all odds even when it’s just plain violence which is pleasurable in addition to being funny in the middle of all the drama. Among the best things about the movie is the on-screen chemistry between the two lovers.
The camera work is quite sophisticated, which is usually the trend in Hong Kong movies, which to be fair looks good. The editing leads to a quicker than usual pace, which is somewhat unexpected considering the theme but it works rather well stylistically for the story and even more so for the romance and the comedy part.
“Stand Up Story” definitely has some weaknesses in the storytelling, but to its merit, considering all its components, it comes out on the positive side, especially in the sense that it gets us to laugh at a rather serious situation without being too unrealistic.
