Irish Wish (2024)

Irish-Wish
Irish Wish

There exists a certain dynamic between the Irish people and the abysmal American rom-coms, starting off with P.S. I Love You self narrated by Gerard Butler in the voice of a ghost. The American curse stretches further with Leap Year, where a character says “Top o’ the morning!” and Wild Mountain Thyme portrays Jamie Dornan in the role of a bee. All in all, I think the Irish Wish is bound to follow the tradition of horrendous Irish roman comedies. To put things more into perspective, the National Leprechaun Museum said this quote: “Even we think this is a bit much.”

The same abomination was created with the Irish Wish; apart from being a rom com, it is riddled with clichés that include: fiddle-heavy folk music, fantasized leprechaun characters, Irish moving and unflavored Guinness and a bunch of odd accents which are signature to welsh actors. In short there are a plethora of accusations that can be levied against romantic comedies, especially the ones based in Ireland.

On the other hand, the Ireland location for this movie appears to be barely relevant and even marginal. Irish Wish is first and foremost a film of Lindsay Lohan, for the actor is now returning as a brand of romcom movie with the film along with festive-skiing-amnesia boring Falling For Christmas back in 2022, appearing in the Parent Trap and Freaky Friday in her earlier days. Yes! I believe it is attempting to channel that goofy family room picture tone and it’s fake, and fantasy logic and grammar of those films. Repeating the ostensible equivalence of Home Alone Movie,” I made my family disappear! wherein the Maddie moves along the spectrum of Paul Kennedy and making her way through all sorts and types of delights.” As with all the kisses she earned, babys grumbled her line while giving out some kisses.

This already thickest up Lillian in which, in this case, has no major effects and Lohan, simply said the new tribe of viewers targeted would give this film.

Let us overlook the fact that the orientation has the feeling of reductionism or parody to it and the presentation has the abrasiveness of Kiss of Death, because, as always, any attempt at jokes is be laughed out to the most distant corner of your head (yes, there is a use of the term Check, please at least once). Also the sensitivity toward the culture of the hosting nation is not higher than that of las Vegas.

It’s all about Lohan here though. Her Maddie is presented as a normal person dressed up as a queen: in her late thirties, unsuccessful in love with no one interested in her ever, and has a job that many people don’t appreciate much. She is fond of reading, which becomes quite obvious, as she has glasses on. Her favorite author is James Joyce and you can tell this by the fact that she mentions it once (This scene is for some reason Denis Leary’s character in the rom-com spoof They Came Together finds pretend material, “I like fiction books right?”).

Maddie is heartachsenly in love with her co worker and client Paul (Alexander Vlahos) who does not seem interested in her. While at work one day, she imagines a Tinkerbell like version of St Brigid of Kildare who comes to her and gives her a wish. Without any of that, or considering that perhaps somewhat less rude demands would have been appropriate (ah well next time world peace), Maddie makes a wish that she could be the bride.

But where did this handsome photographer James played by Englishman Ed Speleers come from? well after all her dreams come true she is able to understand that the photographer comes into the picture. (But then, one is told, the 1649 Cromwellian conquest of Ireland never ended but only mutate- she said rolling her eyes and smiling). The two order a pint, do an irish jig reminiscent of the titanic, and do pass around darts while commenting rudely at each other while perched at the bar.

Rest assured, it is easy to guess what is going to happen next. And actually, such a film should only surprise once or the once surprise should be a total absence, it is meant to be a trash of a movie with great advice to viewing an extra warm blanket on the couch with hot chocolate need not be emphasized to be served while watching this movie or simply keeping it running in the background. To be clear, Irish Wish is a film which isn’t great, far from it even. At the base of the filmmaking process it is not possible to make such a recommendation period. But having said that, it does indeed get you in trouble with the Lohan doesn’t it.
