Starting life afresh, single migrant mother Joy (Max Eigenmann) moves from one place to another searching for jobs in order to pay for her young daughter Graces’ living expenses. She then applies for her divergent role as mother and caregiver for Katherine (Leanne Best) in return for Philip’s (D. A. John) outstanding balance. However, before he passes away, Mr. Garrett (David Hayman) who refuses to leave the house seeks assistance with his palliative care. With the both of them moving in together and Grace sneaking in and out, they begin to realize that the strange dynamic between Katherine and Philip is more dangerous than it seems.
There is a lot to admire about “Raging Grace.” The writer and director Zarcilla manages to come up with a thoroughly engaging premise which is dealt with reasonably well. The first half of the film is very much Joy’s explorations of the chaos that surrounds her while she is attempting to keep her life’s most important aspects intact. Firstly, she is a single mother to Grace, which in its own way is a plausible indignity. Finding a place to live alongside Grace for instance, facing racism and misogynistic drifts for the job that she does, all of these situate to authenticate the hard struggles all together. This makes the new job opportunity with Katharine much appealing to Joy but invariably she finds herself in a much more dangerous situation in Katharine’s house while she is seeing it as a way out of her current lifestyle. This has been approached very nicely for a terrific beginning.
The tension that differentiates Grace is strengthened in the latter half of the film. Now, Zarcilla resorts to somewhat overly ambitious tactics in that due to a barrage of lowkey explanations and reveals that came about, the conditions in which Joy was working under seem to modificar incessantly. As this allows for most of the first part to revolve around Grace living in the establishment in question without Katherine seeing her, or trying to adjust to new rules surrounding her care routine and responsibilities, this in turn creates an atmosphere of mistrust and apprehension. This creates a solid foundation for the so-called treatment or engagement revelations to be positioned there all too cunning and amusing. Weaved into the tension filled ending that unveils the real powers that be, there seems to be quite a lot happening here.
Even though it is not a complete deal-breaker “Raging Grace” does have its setbacks. One of the major concerns is the second half that inserts some additional revelations and turns that aren’t warranted. The events involving the actual shameless activities of Katherine and Mr. Garrett fighting over who takes head of the house are simply contrived as if this is all in for presenting an imposing obstacle for Joy to conquer. Instead, this leads to a larger mix of thoughts going around in the air haphazardly hence giving rise to sheer confusion. Moving on to this extent, there is no harm caused with this characteristic whatsoever, but given the adequate attention that the latter exhibits, it is rather expected and what keeps it in the dark.
While it does go off the rails for the last half of the movie, “Raging Grace” still has some impressive aspects to it as it serves as a drama-thriller. Getting past the gory details of the genre, there is a good amount to tease with this one for those who like the heady content more.
